  • Description

The XT-2 peptide is an antimicrobial peptide isolated from norepinephrine-stimulated skin secretions of the diploid clawed frog Xenopus tropicalis. It is one of seven peptides (XT-1 to XT-7) characterized from these secretions. Structural analysis indicates that XT-2 shows similarity to the spacer region of proxenopsin from Xenopus laevis, and it is considered a potential ortholog. The peptide XT-2, along with its paralog XT-4, was eluted in a chromatographic fraction that exhibited growth-inhibitory activity specifically against Escherichia coli in antimicrobial assays.

The primary structure of XT-2 was determined by Edman degradation and confirmed by mass spectrometry. Among the isolated peptides, XT-2 demonstrated a selective antimicrobial profile, showing activity against E. coli but not against Staphylococcus aureus under the tested conditions. This peptide contributes to the diverse array of antimicrobial peptides found in X. tropicalis skin secretions, which exhibit varied structural features and biological activities.

  • About TFA salt

Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a common counterion from the purification process using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The presence of TFA can affect the peptide's net weight, appearance, and solubility.

Impact on Net Weight: The TFA salt contributes to the total mass of the product. In most cases, the peptide content constitutes >80% of the total weight, with TFA accounting for the remainder.

Solubility: TFA salts generally enhance the solubility of peptides in aqueous solutions.

In Biological Assays: For most standard in vitro assays, the residual TFA levels do not cause interference. However, for highly sensitive cellular or biochemical studies, please be aware of its presence.
