Description
Recombinant fragment of the Sodium- and chloride-dependent betaine transporter (SNF-3) from Caenorhabditis elegans, encompassing residues 137-207. This 71-amino acid fragment represents a stable, soluble unit ideal for structural studies and functional characterization of this important neurotransmitter transporter family protein.
The full-length Sodium- and chloride-dependent betaine transporter (Betaine transporter SNF-3) is a multi-pass membrane protein localized to the cell membrane that functions primarily in the epidermis to clear betaine from the extracellular space. This transporter is dependent on Na(+) and Cl(-) ions and specifically elicits current in response to betaine, but does not respond to GABA, L-carnitine, sarcosine, glycine, or dimethylglycine, demonstrating high substrate specificity. As a member of the sodium:neurotransmitter symporter family, it plays a crucial role in cellular osmoregulation and neurotransmitter transport mechanisms in C. elegans.
