Dhvar4 is a derivative of human histatin 5, a member of a family of antifungal and antibacterial histidine-rich proteins secreted from salivary glands. It is fungicidal at low micromole concentration, while its bactericidal activity is relatively weak. The activity of antimicrobial peptide might be enhanced after improving its ability to reach the cell membrane of target micro-organism.
