Charged Multivesicular Body Protein 5 (CHMP5) is a peripherally associated component of the Endosomal Sorting Required for Transport complex III (ESCRT-III), which plays a critical role in multivesicular body (MVB) formation and the sorting of endosomal cargo proteins into intraluminal vesicles. This process facilitates the degradation of membrane proteins, lysosomal enzymes, and lipids via delivery to lysosomes. Beyond MVB biogenesis, CHMP5 participates in topologically similar membrane fission events, including cytokinesis and the budding of enveloped viruses such as HIV-1.
